Bonhams Sells a Rachel Jones Work for $1.19m

Barely two years out of the Royal Academy schools and after a show at Thaddaeus Ropac in London that closed in February, Rachel Jones has had two major sales bookending March.

At the beginning of the month, her work opened Sotheby’s London The Now sale on March 2nd soaring to $840,000. At the end of the month, a 2019 painting, Spliced Structure (7) sold for $1.19m at Bonhams in London.

The heat on Jones is remarkable even in this period of hot young artists. She’s been written about in The Economist and had her work on the cover of the UK edition of Harper’s Bazaar for its Art issue; been included in influential shows at the Hayward gallery; she was an artist-in-residence at the Chinati foundation in Marfa, Texas; and she’s seen her work acquired by Miami’s ICA. The only surprise about her market growth is that it took so long to emerge and has been compressed so quickly into a matter of weeks rather than months.
