Detailed results from tonight's evening sale at Phillips including the monumental sale of Basquiat's Untitled from 1982, plus ultra contemporary stars Lauren Quin, Anna Weyant, and Shara Hughes.

Eddie Martinez, Kaws, Kerwick and Condo top the strong middle market sale. Phillips New Now made $8.4 million with a 169 lost sold out of 195 offered for a sturdy 89% sell-through rate continuing the strength of the market for emerging artists.

A market that favors emerging talent plays to Phillips strength. Phillips Evening sale in London made £30.1 million or $39.5 million with 39 of the 41 lots offered sold. Another six lots were withdrawn pre-sale.

Estimated at $70 million, the key work has the potential to re-set the market. In a little more than a month, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s family is going to open an exhibition of his work and the family’s holdings in lower Manhattan.

After a 45% rise in prints and editions sale volume, Phillips goes from 4 live sales to 7 in 2022. All three major auction houses have a long-standing interest in the category but Phillips announced today that it will expand the number of its editions live auctions this year.

In the midst of a market hungry for contemporary African art, Phillips has partnered with Ghanaian-based art collective Artemartis to present “Birds of a Feather,” on view February 1st through 10th, 2022 at 30 Berkeley Square.
