Sotheby’s major Hong Kong sales will also take place on Wednesday the 27th. The Modern Evening Auction, beginning at 6 am EDT, has already drawn press attention with all eyes on Picasso’s red portrait of Dora Maar.

This week the sales season ramps up with major auctions in Hong Kong as well as New York and some online sales. There is a particular emphasis on emerging talent.

The market for works by Claude Monet entered a dramatic new phase during the pandemic. Works that had been priced at auction between $27 and $36.5 million before the pandemic began seem to be trading at prices from $48 million to $70 million.
